Roy E. BurgessArtist StatementMy paintings celebrate the differences of people, cultures and creeds. The paintings focus on dismantling stereotypes of our multicultural society. I attempt to tell the human side of the unique people in our country with respect. Artist's HistoryGrowing up in a small town in Middle of the United States, My first serious paintings were of the First Americans and cowboys living in the western United States. In my midlife I became aware of the vanishing way of life that I grew up with. I started to paint my small-town neighbors and the rural farmers from my childhood before their lifestyles were gone. These paintings inspired my first first museum exhibit called Rural Roots. The paintings were viewed in art museums in the mid-west in the 1980's. Then in I988, I proposed an artist exchange with the Soviet Union without the official sanction of the U.S. State Department. I traveled with my paintings to the Soviet Union the following year to exhibit at the Stavropol Exhibition Hall hosted by the Union of Soviet Socialists Artists. In 1990, I reciprocated and hosted Alexei Sokolenko, the first and only Soviet painter allowed to visit and exhibit his art in America before the fall of communism. I returned to Russia in the early 1990's with another series titled, Streets. These paintings portray people living the city life. After the Streets opening reception at the Stavropol Territory Museum of Art and during the three years my paintings were shown at other locations in Russia, I moved to a Benedictine monastery dedicated to serving the Native American people For two years as artist in residence I worked on a series about the Dakota tribe of the legendary Sioux First Nation. Living the cloister life with monks produced another series about their world called Black Robes. The monks giving lifestyle instilled in me the belief that I should continue to create art that gives. In the late 1990's, I moved to St. Martin in the West Indies to research and paint the different nationalities living in the Caribbean islands. In 2005 I moved to Maui in the Hawaiian islands to create a series about the unique people that live on the beautiful islands of the Pacific.Museum Exhibit For SaleTwelve original paintings created by street artist Roy E. The artist found his friend, Slim, unconscious, close to death from alcohol addiction. He was hospitalized for several days, then returned to his homeless camp to recover. Fortunately that was his final drunk, his body had rebelled. Slim hasn't had a drink in 25+ years. The disease continues without a cure. He robs and beats other homeless people for their money to support his alcohol and drug habit. Other home free men would protect women and children from Duke. This was the scene that was occurring more often in Slim's life. As he became sicker, he would drink more until his body would rebel and he would spit up blood for several days. He would quit drinking, sometimes for months, until his body seemed healed. Then he would go back to drinking. He was addicted to the stuff. The Hawaiian is weaving with 3 to 4 feet long leaves from the hala tree (padanus). The tree is sometimes called screw pine. Hala was used to make baskets, floor mats, sleeping mats and to thatch houses. The sails of the Hawaiian outrigger canoes were even from hala.
