Floral Expression - Watercolors Carsten Wieland 2021Floral Expression - Watercolors Carsten Wieland 2021If I had been told a few months ago that I would soon have been passionate about painting flowers in watercolor, I would have shaken my head and said it was a mistake. Not that I don't like flowers - in fact, I like them very much. But so far I've always thought that flowers are so beautiful in themselves that you don't have to paint them. Plus, if I'm honest, I find most flower watercolors pretty boring. And the few exceptions that I really like come from artists whom, in my opinion, I cannot hold a candle to and who do their job so well that there is actually nothing more to add. But I was wrong, I didn't expect that painting flowers would help me to get out of a deep depression. But suddenly there was the depression and when I lacked the drive to do everything, I suddenly stopped enjoying painting, which had become my passion in recent years. I couldn't even get myself up to do that, and if I tried, I gave up after a few brushstrokes because the spark just wouldn't jump over anymore. The only thing that came out of it were tired repetitions of motifs that had often been painted. Then I said to myself "Try something completely different" and came up with flowers. At first hesitantly and based on my own photos as a template, because I have always enjoyed taking photos and studying flowers. But then chance came into play: an involuntary large splash of magenta paint on a white sheet of paper. It vaguely reminded me of a flower, so I grabbed the largest brush I could find and completed the picture. And suddenly I knew how I wanted to paint flowers: wild and impetuous, out of my head without constantly looking at a template and leaving a lot to chance, which is the most important thing for me in a good watercolor. Hardly a day has passed since then that I did not start with a large-format flower watercolor. It has become a daily meditation and therapy and has helped me keep my depression in check. Here I can let go of everything and also let the colors and water runFlorale Expression - Aquarelle Carsten Wieland 2021Wenn man mir vor ein paar Monaten gesagt hätte, ich würde bald mit Leidenschaft Blumen in Aquarell malen, hätte ich wohl den Kopf geschüttelt und behauptet, dass es sich um einen Irrtum handelt. Nicht, dass ich Blumen nicht mag – ich mag sie sogar sehr. Aber bisher habe ich immer gedacht, dass Blumen an sich so schön sind, dass man sie nicht noch malen muss. Außerdem finde ich die meisten Blumen-Aquarelle, wenn ich ehrlich bin, ziemlich langweilig. Und die wenigen Ausnahmen, die mir wirklich gefallen, kommen von KünstlerInnen, denen ich meiner Meinung nach nicht das Wasser reichen kann und die ihren Job so gut machen, dass dem eigentlich nichts mehr hinzuzufügen ist. Doch ich habe mich getäuscht, hatte ich doch nicht erwartet, dass mir gerade das Malen von Blumen helfen würde, mich aus einer tiefen Depression heraus zu strampeln. Aber plötzlich war sie da die Depression und als mir zu allem der Antrieb fehlte, machte mir auch das Malen, dass in den letzten Jahren meine Leidenschaft geworden war, plötzlich keinen Spaß mehr. Noch nicht einmal dazu konnte ich mich aufraffen, und wenn ich es doch versuchte, gab ich nach ein paar Pinselstrichen wieder auf, weil der Funke einfach nicht mehr überspringen wollte. Das einzige was dabei herauskam, waren müde Wiederholungen von Motiven, die schon häufig gemalt hatte. Dann habe ich mir gesagt "Versuch doch mal etwas ganz anderes" und kam so auf Blumen. Erst noch zaghaft und nach eigenen Fotos als Vorlage, denn fotografiert und studiert habe ich Blumen schon immer gerne. Doch dann kam der Zufall ins Spiel: Ein unfreiwilliger großer Farbspritzer in Magenta auf einem weißen Blatt Papier. Er erinnerte mich entfernt an eine Blüte, also schnappte ich mir den größten Pinsel, den ich finden konnte und vervollständigte das Bild. Und plötzlich wusste ich, wie ich Blumen malen wollte: Wild und ungestüm, aus dem Kopf ohne ständig auf eine Vorlage zu schauen und viel dem Zufall überlassend, was für mich bei einem guten Aquarell das wichtWatercolor Tutorials / Aquarell TutorialsAquarell-Tutorials für alle, die gerne malen.
