James Hague

Artists: James Hague

James Hague’s art is distinguished by its deeply expressive and thoughtful approach to figurative portraiture, where psychological presence and emotional nuance take centre stage. Working primarily in oil, Hague’s paintings balance sensitive observation with painterly freedom, capturing more than just likeness — they convey mood, character and the lived experience of his sitters. His compositions often reveal a quiet introspection, articulated through rich surfaces, subtle contrasts of light and shadow, and layers of paint that give his figures a palpable presence within the pictorial space. Whether portraying a commissioned sitter or producing more personal works, Hague’s art invites viewers into an intimate engagement with the human condition, where every gesture and gaze contributes to a compelling narrative beyond the visible image. James Hague is a London based artist who studied Fine Art at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle and the Royal College of Art. In 1996, he won the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in London. He was the recipient of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters RP Award (2019) and the Ondaatje Prize for Portraiture (2018). Other prizes for painting include: 2014 Ismet Mujezinović Portrait Prize (Bosnia), 2013 Portrait Now! Brewer J.C.Jacobsen’s Portrait Award (Denmark), 2006 Lynn-Painter Stainers Prize (UK), 2004 Royal College of Art Amlin Painting Prize (UK) and 2004 Royal College of Art Stanley Smith Scholarship (UK). James is part of the faculty of The Heatherley School of Fine Art, and a member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and Contemporary British Portrait Painters.
